General information:
Świbno is a fishing village situated on the western bank, about 1 mile south of the mouth of Vistula Adit. The adit finished in 1895 is now the main estuary of the Vistula to the Gulf of Gdańsk. The belt of wooded sand dunes divides the village from the Gulf. South of the port between Świbno and Gdańsk runs the left arm of the Vistula Delta called Dead Vistula River. The first written document about Świbno as a fishing settlement comes from 1503. At present administratively it is a suburb of Gdańsk. On the opposite, eastern bank of the river entrance lies other fishing village Mikoszewo, which is a base for 2 fishing boats, 7m long with engine power of 25 HP. A passenger ferry connects both villages. In the neighbourhood of these two villages the wide delta of Vistula River is intersected by numerous canal and dikes and marked in places by wind mills. In some parts the level of the ground is a little below sea-level, but about 0.5 mile from the coast the land rises to a height of about 20m and is densely wooded.
Świbno used to be a cooperative fishing harbour. The boats are in a private hands, now. Some fishing boats have been transported by lorries from Świbno to the Vistula Lagoon, for fishing during the lagoon herring season.
There is Coastal Rescue Station equipped with terrain trucks, motor surf-lifeboats, line throwing apparatus, a radiotelephone and medical equipment.
