General information:
Kamień Pomorski is one of the oldest towns in Western Pomerania situated on south-east shore of Kamieński Lagoon. From the 9th to the 11th century it was a Slavonic settlement and stronghold stood there. In the 12th century it was the capital of Western Pomeranian Duchy and since 1176 - the seat of the Bishopric. In 1274 Kamień Pomorski was granted its municipal charter, since the 14th century it was a charter member of Hanseatic League. Since 1679 it was under the Brandenburg and Prussia rule. At the end of the 19th century Kamień Pomorski was a fishing-trading centre. In 1945 the town came back to Poland. Since 1959 Kamień Pomorski has been a health resort, known for its saline baths and sanatoria. The town with a po-pulation of about 9000 is known for the yearly festival of organ and camer music. Festivals, in which the finest Polish and foreign musicians take part, are held in the cathedral. The cathedral at Kamień Pomorski is one of the most precious buildings of historical interest in Western Pomerania. The original Romanesque building was erected in the 12th and 13th centuries. It was altered to the Gothic style in the mid-15th century. The most valuable features at the richly furnished interior are the early Gothic sculptures, the polychrome frescoes, the baptismal front, the late Gothic main altar, and a splendid organ.
At present the town has a small fishing port. The harbour comprises of 2 small basins and a 60m long pier with a minimum depth of 2.3m alongside. It is used as a passenger terminal. The port is unsheltered and loading is done in calm weather. There is yacht harbour and recreation passenger ferry during summer time. Some grain reloading take place there. The harbour mainly serves local fishing boats operating in the Lagoon.
