General information:
Chałupy, is the first fishing village and seaside resort situated near the root of Hel Peninsula, close the narrowest part of the peninsula, about 250m wide. In the 17th century the waters of the gulf were connected with the sea by an isthmus. The population of Chałupy is about 1,600. Great number of the inhabitants work in the tourist business. Hel Peninsula, the narrow peninsula on the W side of the Gulf of Puck, extends SE for about 18 miles, from a position about 4 miles SE of Rozewie. It is formed by a sand bar, deposited by the sea and modelled by the wind which has piled the sand into high dunes. The peninsula is dotted with fishing harbours and holiday resorts.
On the seaward side of the peninsula, a line of wooded dunes, from 3 to 29 m high, extend along its whole length. From Chałupy there is an access, both to the Baltic Sea and to the Puck Bay. It is a favourite place to practise surf bathing.
The first written record about Chałupy fishing settlement is dated 1678.
In 1772 there were 11 fishermen's cottages and five families had the Kasubian surname Ceynowa.
The fishing community in 1920 numbered 38 families, which used 10 larger and 35 smaller fishing boats.
