Port of Ystad, Sweden, prepares to open the world's largest High Voltage Shore Connection, September 14.
With a capability to service up to four ships simultaneously, the 35 million SEK (approximately 7 million USD) offers both 50 and 60 Herz frequencies at 11 000 volts, making Ystad's on shore power infrastructure the worl'd not only largest, but most versatile, minimizing the need for on-board investments for the receiving ships.
- This is a great leap towards our goal to make the Port of Ystad into Sweden's most enviromental friendly harbour for commercial shipping, says CEO Björn Boström.
The HVSC enables docked vessels to draw their electricity needed for operating their onboard systems, including ventilation and cooling, greatly reducing exhausts and noice levels. Since the use of shore-side power allows ships to shut off their diesel engines while docked in port it also facilitates maintenance work on engines and generators on board.
The output of Ystad's HVSC is approximately 5 megawatts, comparable to the energy needs of a 250 house community, or the output of two regular wind turbines.
The opening seremony will be held at 10 o'clock, friday september 14th, and will be followed by a seminar on infrastructure and enviroment, open to the public and with invited speakers, national, regional and local politicians.
The Port of Ystad is the country's second largest port for rail transports and the third for passengers. It holds two ferry services to Swinoujscie in Poland and one to Ronne on the danish isle of Bornholm.
