Norwegian-based ferry company Fjord Line AS, Egersund, announced that the company's two new cruise ferries, currently under construction at Bergen Group Fosen, will be powered only by environmentally friendly liquefied natural gas (LNG) instead of heavy fuel oil.
Thereby the company says it will meet the upcoming regulations for sulphur content in fuels before they will enter into force in 2015. The ferry company has chosen Rolls-Royce as the supplier of the LNG engines. Upon the delivery of the first vessel "Stavangerfjord", which is scheduled for April 2013, the LNG-powered ferry will ply the daily route between the two Norwegian cities Bergen and Stavanger and Hirtshals in Denmark. Following a few months later, the second newbuilding will be connecting Hirtshals and Langesund, Norway.
